I was in the market for a new home theatre system to replace an older failing unit. I decided not to go with the home theatre in the box systems after extensive research. I found the receiver I wanted and ordered it; the Pioneer VSX918 which I reviewed as well. Now I was left with the decision as to what speakers to go with. Just so happened that I ran across a deal on the MCS100. I was skeptical at first since I had never owned a powered sub and felt that the small powered 8 inch sub would not meet my expectations. BOY, was I wrong! br /br /I knew that Boston Acoustic was a quality brand but I just hadn’t personally heard any of their products. The MCS100 was clearanced priced at a local retailer but they didn’t have a demo unit hooked up so that I could listen to it. That was a little disappointing especially based on the extremely low price. I went home and did more research and found quite a number of reviews on the system from Amazon as well as on home theatre forums. I was still undecided after reading the reviews but decided to pull the trigger anyway. The retailer stated that if I wasn’t happy then I could return the system. That was fair enough. I went in purchasing the system with the intentions on ordering another subwoofer to replace or add to what I thought would be weak powered sub. Again I was wrong.br /br /The build quality is great on this system. The surrounds are nice and heavy which surprised me as well. The sub is also fairly weighty but the true surprise was after I setup the system. I reran 16 gauge speaker wire to replace my smaller gauge in the previous home theatre setup and turned the system on. I went ahead and turned the sub up fairly high thinking that it would be the weak part of the system. After a little tweaking with the sytem I decided to give it a test with both home theatre input as well as with music. I tried music first. I was completely floored by the output. The sound was amazing from the surrounds as well as the sub. So much output was coming from the sub that I turned it down. I then tried movie content. I tested with Transformers BluRay. I was even more amazed by the output at that point. br /br /The speakers are clear and the sub put out so much power that the pictures and skances on the walls were rattling and shaking. The sub output was clear and smooth. It was like thunder verses a sound from a speaker. With some systems I’ve listened to you can point to where the low bass is coming from but with the MCS100 if I didn’t tell you where the sub was you probably wouldn’t know. The sound seemed to fill the entire room as well as the house and with the sub being small you couldn’t and wouldn’t think that it was producing or even capable of producing that type of sound. BUT IT WAS. This was after I turned the sub down on the sub level and before I even touched it on the receiver. I still have to fine tune the system but from the testing that was done over a period of an hour or so the MCS100 will be staying in my living room. br /br /I’m no audiphile but for me this system met and surpassed by needs and expectations. There are better systems out there I’m sure but for the price I paid I’m throughly pleased. My living room is around 15×10 with vaulted ceilings and it opens to the dining area. I was definitley concerened that the system would be underpowered based on the reviews of others and my room layout. In my situation it wasn’t unpowered. It was powered so much that with it turned up you had to literally yell to talk to the person sitting a few feet from you. It fills my living room more than adequately. I also consider myself a bass head (liking bass in musice and home theatre). This little powered 8 again met and surpassed my wildest dreams. I’m no longer considering replacing the sub as I had been before listening to it. br /br /The outer appearance of the system is not the greatest but the old saying “you can’t judge a book by it’s cover” definitely proved true in my case with the MCS100. I have the black system and it’s not black as the pics shows. The grills are black but the outter casing is more of a grey which still blends with my decor. I don’t regret this purchase.I highly recommend the MCS100 to anyone.
