The Opteka slide copier works well with the Fuji Finepix, requiring only a supplied 58mm/52mm adapter ring to connect to the camera’s lens. The 35mm slide adapter is a little cumbersome, particularly in its vertical axis, which is difficult to lock. It’s also difficult to avoid bumping either the zoom lens or slide adapter while adjusting one or the other, but perhaps practice makes perfect. You’ll need a bright light (preferably sunlight) because the length of lens and adapter makes this a slow combination, and will need to experiment with ISO/aperture/shutter speed settings because simply putting the camera on Auto will not give you the best results. The relative darkness of the adapter means it can be difficult to see the edges of the frame, but again practice will help. Fortunately the Fuji has plenty of adjustments readily available and I used them all – ISO between 80 and 200 depending on the contrast of the original 35mm slide; either A (aperture priority) or S (shutter priority) depending on the depth of field required; and the metering – which is the most important of all. Spot metering (anticlockwise position on knob) is accurate but your original slides must be evenly-exposed for it to be of use: center-weighted (center position) is usually best but doesn’t handle bright areas outside the center of the slide: average weighting over the screen (clockwise position) usually works when the others don’t, but can come up with odd results if you use it for every slide. Colour temperature is very important and you’ll need to set white balance on the camera before starting. Having done all this, is it worth it? I’m not sure – my first attempts were more contrasty than I’d expected – which is always a problem of contrast ratio differences between emulsion and digital images. I can correct the results with Photoshop, but there is also a lack of fine definition which is probably due to the sheer amount of optics involved in the process. I need to experiment some more, because I didn’t use the Raw TIFF setting for the camera which should make a difference. Overall this is a useful gadget but don’t expect to see results that match your original slides.
