This product is specifically for my new Whirlpool side-by-side. Used up the original one that came with it and it worked great. The city water that came into my house wasn’t good – not only is it NOT CLEAR, it tastes funny too. Even after I filtered it through a PUR water jug, the water was clear but it still tasted weird. I think it’s because I needed a better quality filter on the PUR filter jug and the one that came with it was the most basic filter.br /br /Anyway, since I bought my new refridgerator with this built-in water filter (also by PUR), the filtered water came out clean and tasted great (well, it tasted like, water!).br /br /Like most consumers, I searched everywhere, comparing different websites, adding the tax + shipping (some even provided FREE SHIPPING). I can’t believe that after all the time spent, researching the lowest price websites and then finding out problems that people had based on their reviews, I still came back to purchase from Amazon.com. At the end of the day, Amazon.com’s price wasn’t the lowest but it was still much cheaper than the retail stores. At least I know that purchasing from Amazon.com, I won’t get screwed!!br /br /So my advice is, if you just started to search for this product, save yourself some time and just buy it here!! And NO, I’m not getting paid by Amazon.com to type this review. Hope this helps you guys!!!

This filter replaces old GE part numbers GWF01 (SmartWater), GWF06 (SmartWater Plus), and Hotpoint HWF. It improves the taste and odor of the water and removes the following impurities: 99.97% of Cysts, More than 85% of Particulates (Class I), 99% of Turbidity, 99% of Lead, 98% of Chlorine, 84% of 2,4-D (a common herbicide), 76% of Atrazine (a herbicide), 91% of Lindane (a pesticide), and 99% of Asbestos. GE recommends that you replace the filter every 6 months if your refrigerator is not equipped with a filter status indicator light OR if your refrigerator has a filter status light, the filter should be changed when the light comes on or after one year, whichever comes first OR if the refrigerator has not been used for more than two weeks (for instance, during a move) OR if you notice a decrease in the flow of water or objectionable tastes in the water or ice. Are problems specific to certain GE fridges? Many of the complaints seem to be recent and I wonder if Brita sent out a batch of bad filters. Has anyone tried the WaterSentinel(tm) WSG-1 Replacement Filter(http://www.amazon.com/Water-Sentinel-Replacement-Kenmore-Hotpoint/dp/B001QAACOM/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_1) for GE Profile Arctica pss26mgpa bb and other refrigerators? They’re (…) less, but short of sending water samples to a lab, how do we know what they filter?
