The EN-EL3 is a compact Lithium-ion power supply for use exclusively with Nikon digital cameras. It can be recharged repeatedly using the MH-18 quick charger or the MH-19 multi charger. Approximately 1,600 shots can be taken with a fully charged EN-EL3 battery. Two can be used in the Multi-function battery pack MB-D100 for extended shooting periods. To charge the EN-EL3 use the MH-18 (supplied with D100), or the optional multi-charger MH-19 that charges two EN-EL3 batteries from mains power supplies 100-240V or a 12V cigar lighter.

The Nikon EN-EL3 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery Pack is a 7.4 volt, 1400mAh rechargeable battery that will give you the juice that you need. Digital and video cameras require far more power than their older film-based counterparts. They do and show a lot more, and therefore they need a lot more power. For instance, most have large LCD displays allowing you to skip having to squint through tiny optical viewfinders when composing shots, and most also allow instant playback or reviewing shots taken, giving you the opportunity to erase lousy shots right away. These are great features to have, but they draw power from your batteries. Adding an extra battery pack as a back up is a safe way to guarantee you never miss that perfect shot again.P The Nikon EN-EL3 Rechargeable Battery Pack requires either the MH18 or MH19 charger, sold separately. IMPORTANT UPDATE (Dec. 2005): Do NOT buy the official Nikon EN-EL3 battery! It has been recalled by Nikon due to short circuit hazard. Details can be found at nikonusa dot com (click the “EN-EL3 battery recall” link). Repeat: this model has been recalled by Nikon, so do not buy. The EN-EL3a or EN-EL3b are compatible replacement models for the EN-EL3. Neither is subject to recall.br /br /My original review from Jan. 2005 follows:br /br /This “genuine” Nikon EN-EL3 battery works in the D70 and D100 digital SLR cameras. The origin can be either Japan or China; apparently Nikon outsources the manufacturing to other companies. (I was able to verify this countries of origin information on Nikon’s website.) For cheaper you can get a compatible battery made by a company that licenses Energizer’s brand; just search for “EN-EL3″ here on Amazon and pick the one that says “by Energizer.” That one is also good and although it’s a generic, it does have the Energizer name (even if not actually made by Energizer). You might want to check that out. Of course, if you are super-concerned about safety — personal and equipment — you should stick with the official Nikon-licensed battery, which is this one.
